Writing By Writers

Pam Houston is a co-founder of the non-profit Writing by Writers. WxW hosts multi-day writing workshops for people interested in writing fiction, nonfiction, memoir and poetry. The workshops are taught by nationally known, published authors, who are adept at teaching the craft of writing to all levels of student. In addition, participants learn how to read others’ work critically and apply those lessons to their own writing.


march 15-17, 2019: WXW boulder generative workshop

The Writing By Writers Boulder Generative Workshop brings aspiring writers into close community with nationally known writers Steve Almond, Ross Gay, and Pam Houston for a weekend of inspiration, craft and the generation of new work. Hosted at the Colorado Chautauqua, a National Historic Landmark in Boulder, Colorado, the location provides plenty of access to hiking trails and the outdoors.



Writing By Writers' Manuscript Boot Camp at Granlibakken in Lake Tahoe, California is for the writer who has a full book-length manuscript (novel, memoir, short story or poetry collection) and would like to engage with a small group for a serious and productive response. The long weekend will include an intimate full manuscript workshop, craft talks, readings, an agent panel and individual agent meetings – the perfect pre-publication boot camp for any manuscript.  Classes are limited to 5 participants.


june 8-22, 2019: WXW Mont Blanc/chamonix, france

Writing By Writers' Mont Blanc Workshop is a two-week long manuscript workshop where writers will have the opportunity to work closely with two different nationally known writers in the stunning French Alps. Workshops are limited to 12 participants to ensure an intimate setting, plus plenty of time to write and explore. 


june 23-28, 2019: esalen writers’ camp

Writers take over the entire Esalen campus during this annual workshop. A tradition begun by best-selling author Cheryl Strayed, Writers' Camp leaders Pam Houston and Samantha Dunn bring together nationally known authors and participants at all levels of writing expertise, who together create a supportive, creative, informative, and inspiring week that's designed to ignite – and re-ignite – your passion for the stories you have to tell.


juLY 14-19, 2019: Provincetown fine arts work CENTER

Join Pam Houston in Provincetown, Massachusetts for a week of writing at the esteemed Fine Arts Work Center. More information to come in January 2019.


october 16-20, 2019: wxw tomales bay workshop

The Writing By Writers Workshop @ Tomales Bay brings aspiring writers into close community with nationally known poets and writers.  Manuscript and poetry workshops are limited to 12 participants to ensure an intimate setting. Check back soon for 2019 faculty and applications.  


oct 27-Nov 1, 2019: santa fe workshops, San miguel de allende, mexico

Writers Pam Houston, Rolf Potts, and Luís Alberto Urrea will join photographers Keith Carter, Sam Abell, Arthur Meyerson, Aline Smithson, Jennifer Spelman and Michael Amici for an exciting season of inspiration, learning, and developing your personal craft. Pam Houston also teaches in the Low Rez MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts, and is Professor of English at UC Davis.
