Writing By Writers

Pam Houston is a co-founder of the non-profit Writing by Writers. WxW hosts multi-day writing workshops for people interested in writing fiction, nonfiction, memoir and poetry. The workshops are taught by nationally known, published authors, who are adept at teaching the craft of writing to all levels of student. In addition, participants learn how to read others’ work critically and apply those lessons to their own writing.

september 7-14, 2024: Turning the Physical World Into Story: A Generative Workshop for Prose Writers of All Levels Clos Mirabel | Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques S.W. France

This creative writing workshop in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains in France will be all about generating new work during the time we are together. We will go through a series of exercises around what I believe are the essential components of good prose writing (image, metaphor, structure, form, dialogue, character, scene, lyricism, others) and turning those components into comprehensible tools for the creative process. We will take inspiration from our beautiful surroundings in the southwest of France, and, I am betting, find more than a few new glimmers lurking there.

June 9-15;16-21, 2024: The Mont Blanc workshop
chamonix, france

The Mont Blanc workshop is a one or two-week long writing adventure where writers will have the opportunity to generate new work, receive manuscript critique, explore Chamonix and hike in stunning French Alps. The workshops are limited to 12 participants to ensure an intimate setting, plus plenty of time to write and enjoy France. All participants will work with faculty member Pam Houston whether they choose to attend one week only or the full two-week session.

July 7-14 & October 13-20, 2024 Writing With Pam Houston
the Zapata Ranch, southern Colorado

Join Pam Houston for a week of writing inspired by the creatures and setting of the Zapata Ranch. A generative workshop, participants will write new work inspired by the surrounding ranch and use this physical world to help access the emotional one. Pam will guide you in discussing elements of craft and accessing the ranch and all its creatures and components as metaphor. We will ride horseback each day, exploring the Great Sand Dunes National park, Medano property amongst bison and historic homesteads, and the stunning Zapata grasslands. All riding levels are welcome.

february 9-15, 2025, Winter Generative Writing Adventure
Wild rice retreat | bayfield, WI

This retreat is perfect for those who want to get a jumpstart on their writing, or have an old project to reinvigorate. Mornings will be spent in class talking writing, talking about contemporary essays and stories, getting started on daily writing assignments. Afternoons are for writing and/or for fun in the snow. Some evenings we will share work in the retreat center after dinner. The snow and the cold and the lake and the forest will remind us we are still alive. This retreat is open to all levels of writers.

Pam Houston also teaches in the Low Rez MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts, and is Professor of English at UC Davis.
